Forties, Freedom, and Faith Lessons

This week I step forth into another milestone year of my forties as I celebrate another blessed birthday. Some people squirm and cringe at the thought of their birthday creeping up; some even claim “I don’t celebrate birthdays any more.” This hurts a little when I hear it. I understand the fear of growing old and facing the sad effects of gravity on our bodies, of looking back in surprise at how much time has passed and how quickly. But every year…every breath…is a gift.  When my birthday rolls around each year, I’m thankful for it. It is a bit sobering, I’ll admit, to see that I’m approaching my mid-forties when I remember fondly the days I thought thirty was ancient.  But I’ve watched my parents face death. I’ve watched friends leave this world. I’ve had my own brushes with it too and I’m delighted to be here. I want to be here. I’ve got a lot to do yet and I’m grateful to be here doing it, to watch my babies grow and experience life with them and my husband.

This age is beautiful. There is an amazing liberation that comes with Forty. I say “Forty” with a capital “F” because the age is like this monument to our freedom: freedom from opinions and self-esteem downers, from giving a crap about what others think because we’ve pretty much come into our own and we’re really good with that.  I wanted to share with you some lessons I’ve learned and things I’ve gained since entering my Forties.  Continue Reading

Five Favorites

We all have those products that are in our personal arsenals of “five favorites”: Things that make us feel better or look better or make our days run more smoothly. Because my kids and I are back in our hometown this week taking care of some old business and visiting with friends and family, I decided to write a lighthearted piece for you to enjoy while I’m on this brief hiatus.  I always enjoy hearing and reading about products that others like and find effective or useful so I’m happy to share with you as well.

Here are some things I’m really excited about lately: Continue Reading

Duck Dynasty: The Good, the Bad, and the Grace of God

The Duck Dynasty empire has grown ever-popular with a successful TV series, products, and books including the upcoming release of The Good, the Bad, and the Grace of God: What Honesty and Pain Taught Us About Faith, Family, and Forgiveness written by Jep and Jessica Robertson with Susy Flory. I had the privilege to read this profound book before its release in a few weeks on June 23, 2015.

I was excited to receive an advance reader’s copy of this book from Family Christian in exchange for an honest review. I dove right into this book, excited to learn more about this family who’d already endeared themselves to me through their television series and their display of faith. I wasn’t disappointed. I couldn’t put it down once I picked it up.  Continue Reading

On Your Graduation…

Thousands of bright-eyed, hopeful, big dreamers are taking part in graduation this month. They will transition from thirteen years of school surrounded by friends, some they’ve known since toddler-hood. They’ll make plans…plans that will set the course for the next big phase of their lives. They’ll make decisions that will direct their paths.

As I sat at two graduation ceremonies this week for two different schools in support of my daughter’s graduating friends, listening to speeches, I wondered what I’d say if I had to share words of wisdom to these kids-turning-adults who are tingling with excitement about what they’ve accomplished and what their collective futures hold.
