Ann Voskamp ‘The Broken Way’ Review

We all have brokenness. The more I write and receive feedback, the more I discover that there are others like me: people who’ve suffered, who’ve had their pieces shattered and have experienced real hurt that hits us right behind the knees, knocking us on our faces. I discover often and over and over that there are very few of us who haven’t been there.

Ann Voskamp writes with profound insight. This New York Times bestselling author is well-known for her books The Greatest Gift, Unwrapping the Greatest Gift, and the 60-week NYT bestseller, One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are. And she’s intimately acquainted with tragedy and brokenness. Give Your Children the World (Without Leaving the House)

We have a pretty amazing world, don’t you agree? Most of us are experts about our own area: our home, neighborhood, town, schools. We’re taught a very young age to memorize our home address. Our immediate world is familiar, comfortable.

We want to broaden our own horizons and those of our children and teach them about the world, other cultures, and how they’re both similar and different from our own culture.

When I was a child, we made several family trips to Canada, where my grandmother was from. Those visits and family reunions are some of the my favorite childhood memories. I remember witnessing a couple speaking French in a restaurant and how fascinating that was to me. I was about five years old and that was the first time I’d heard of the French language. Or of France. Continue Reading

Breaking Up with Perfect | Can We?

Breaking up is hard to do, they say. Are we ready and able to be breaking up with perfect?

God showed me what a brutal companion Perfect had been.

I haven’t written in weeks. Our family has been very busy, to the point of being pooped right out. My kids are working. We had a visiting dog. A family wedding out of town. I taught a class in our vacation Bible school at our church. I met Rick Springfield (I should probably write about that, right??)

And I’ve been falling all over myself trying to do it all brilliantly with perfection. Look perfect.  Teach perfectly. Make crafts perfectly. Make the guest dog perfect. Act all perfect for Rick Springfield.

Breaking Up with Perfect

Seriously, don’t we know by now that Perfect is a tease? We can just about achieve it and we will exhaust ourselves trying, but it hangs out there just out of reach like a dangling carrot. We keep jumping at it, grabbing for it, but we can never quite grab it, can we?

Because Perfect isn’t real. We can’t be  Perfect. Only Perfect is Perfect. We set ourselves up to fail if we think we’re going to achieve perfection.

Amy Carroll in her book  Breaking Up with Perfect: Kiss Perfection Good-Bye and Embrace the Joy God Has in Store for You  says  “I write tasks on my lists that I’ve already accomplished just for the pure joy of checking them off!”  I do this. I’ve done it for years now. Some days we don’t think we get nearly enough done so it’s encouraging to see those things checked off our lists, even if they were already done when we added them to our to-do lists!

From Breaking Up with Perfect:

The book will help you:

  • Experience authenticity as the antidote for isolation.
  • Trade the Lies of Perfection  for the  Truths of God’s Love
  • End the pursuit of perfection, so God can begin His powerful perfecting work in you!

How does that sound? Pretty great, right? I would like you to read this book. If you’re anything like me, you need it. I have a fresh copy for one of you so please enter this giveaway by simply commenting on this post. It’s easy, free, and just might get  you this sweet and meaningful book! Walk with Me

I want you to walk with me. Not on some proverbial emotional path, but literally walk with me.

About a year ago, I got really interested in fitness. Since I battle the beast that is Crohn’s disease, sometimes exercise isn’t a choice. Some days I just simply–well–can’t. But I’ve been using every available ounce of energy to workout at least three times a week to the best of my physical ability. I’m trying to use exercise and food choices as medicine in hopes of fighting back against my health issues. Continue Reading
